New Degree Program in Consumer Finance

A new Bachelor of Science degree in Consumer Financial Services will start at RIT in the Fall quarter, 20071. This unique new program is designed to fill a need for employees in the rapidly growing financial services industry, and has been endorsed by several different financial service businesses, professional groups, nonprofits as well as state and national government offices.

An undergraduate degree in Consumer Finance will gear the graduate for a career in one of three financial areas: financial planning (investments and portfolio management), the banking and insurance industries and the debt counseling and debt management industry. Students will team up with industry leaders through co-ops, fieldwork or college sponsored projects. Financial service executives will be a significant resource as guest lecturers or a source of real world case study material.

Careers that could be pursued by graduates with a degree in Consumer Finance include personal financial advisors, securities, commodities and financial service sales agents, bank trust officers, compliance officers, financial analysts, portfolio managers, bank officers, insurance sales agents, credit analysts, loan counselors, bankruptcy trustees and real estate agents.

One of the first new offerings will be a course titled “Money, Consumers and the Family” taught by Prof. Manning. Other courses will be added sequentially. Students in the investment track will be prepared to sit for the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA®) and Certified Financial Planner (CFP®) programs.

Coop and career opportunities are available at Filene Research Organization, Visions Federal Credit Unions and the NYS Attorney General's Office in Rochester, NY>
